Wash your hands, don’t touch your face and maintain at least six feet in between you and others when you’re out in public – this is our new normal during the Coronavirus pandemic. And with everyone mandated to stay at home or “shelter in place” until the end of April, many people are looking for ways to maintain their sanity and keep themselves and their families entertained. To help, we’ve put together a list of apps for streaming TV shows, movies and audio books as well as group video chat services you can use for free.

Entertainment services and apps

Netflix party

Netflix party is a free extension on Chrome that allows you to watch your favorite movies and shows – or explore new ones – with friends and family remotely. You can watch things on Netflix in real-time with long-distance relatives, or friends who you haven’t seen since quarantine. It even offers a group chat option so you can comment on things as you watch them. You can learn more about how it works and compatibility requirements here.

Live Streaming

With the cancellation of music festivals and concerts, artists are finding new ways to get their music out to fans through things like Instagram Live and Twitch. DJs, producers and artists alike have been hosting live music battles on Instagram Live for fans to tune in, watch and engage through social media. Not sure if your favorite artists are live streaming? Check their verified Twitter and Instagram for updates and announcements.

Audible for families

Staying home and practicing social distancing is difficult for anyone, but those who are at home with kids may be struggling in finding ways to keep the kids engaged and learning. That’s why Amazon is offering free stories through Audible for the whole family. From Harry Potter to Winnie the Pooh to literary classics, you can find something for just about any age group. They’re also offering audio books in six different languages. Search their library and start listening for free.

Ways to stay connected

Zoom

Zoom isn’t just for work meetings or digital learning anymore; more and more people are starting to use the content sharing and video conferencing software to stay connected with friends and family during this time with things like virtual happy hours, digital karaoke sessions and mini family reunions. Although there are some paid subscription options, you can host any meeting (with up to 100 participants) for free for up to 40 minutes.

Houseparty

This free app allows you to have a group video call with up to eight of your friends; your friends can even add you to video calls with their friends who you don’t have added in your contacts or friends list. All you have to do is download the app on your phone or other device to get started. It also allows you to play games, like Heads Up and Trivia, while on a video call.
